Feature #2 on Grace Ormonde Wedding Style!

Monday, October 28th, 2013

Grace Ormonde Wedding Style (GO) is the epitome of high-class.  When it comes to wedding magazines and an online showcase of weddings, GO is a pretty big deal.  Earlier this month we told you about a wedding we took part in that was showcased by the site, and now just a few weeks later, we are thrilled to announce yet another has been featured!

Sweet Cheeks Baking Wedding Cake

Blake and Nicole have an adorable story  Nicole “met” Blake while browsing through her girlfriend’s Match.com account.  She happened upon Blake’s picture and immediately thought, “wow… he’s so cute!”   In fact, Blake had no idea that his friends had even created an account for him, so you can imagine his surprise when Nicole sent him a message asking to set up a date!  Once they met, though, the connection was immediate.   Ever since, they have not spent a day apart from one another.

Their wedding was soft and elegant, with pinks and whites being their main wedding colors.  The couple loves the sea, so we made a cake that incorporated sea-inspired elements of starfish and coral.  The cake was simple, yet the design elements fit perfectly with the pastel color scheme that was their wedding.

It was a gorgeous wedding in Carlsbad, and we were honored to be a part of an amazing day.  We are also especially honored to be among the other amazing wedding vendors that made Blake + Nicole’s wedding worthy of Grace Ormonde!

Hawaiian-Themed Vow Renewal

Sunday, October 13th, 2013

More often than not, we receive photos of the weddings we are a part of, but every so often, we get an awesome video documenting the special day.

Recently, one of our favorite couples, Angie + Barry Smith, shared a video of not their wedding, but their vow renewal!  This couple has the best sense of humor, and their Hawaiian-themed vow renewals were all about fun and entertainment! There were Hula Dancers, Fire-Throwers, Leis for the Bridal party and Groomsmen, Hibiscus, Orchids, and Birds of Paradise decorations: this special day was all about Hawaii – set in our beautiful San Diego.

The day was full of color, and as such, we wanted the “wedding” cake to reflect this couple’s unique personality and theme.  It is, unfortunately, not as common for couples to renew vows, so we were so excited to work with this couple!

As Seen on Grace Ormonde Wedding Style…

Thursday, October 3rd, 2013

The wedding may have been months ago, but just recently, the lovely multicultural wedding of Braja Mandala and Gene Higa was featured on the ever so famous wedding site, Grace Ormonde Wedding Style.  Being that both the bride and groom are wedding photographers, the day was filled with extra special touches that reflected their elegant, black-tie taste.

The wedding took place in La Jolla, at the gorgeous Estancia La Jolla.  Gene, a Buddhist, and Braja, Hindu, worked together to find the perfect representation for their religions, and in the end, a Hindu priest customized their ceremony and integrated various traditions, and even some new ones.  Then, in honor of the Asian inspiration, the space was decorated with cherry blossoms, Buddha statues, and lots of candles.

The day was absolutely perfect, and we were so happy to be a part of this couple’s day.  This wedding was all about elegance, so the cake we made for this wedding was that too, elegant.

Real Wedding :: Briana + Steve

Friday, September 20th, 2013

The phrase goes: “like father, like son,” yet for this real wedding feature, we challenge that idiom.

To start, backtrack a few years.  It was the wedding of Cheyne (pronounced like Shane) + Megan, and let’s just say: it was a huge deal!  The couple had just won the “Amazing Race” together, and as a result, their wedding was a media frenzy!  (We even made it to PEOPLE Magazine online as a result, but that’s not the point!)

Well, back to present day, and with the coolest of situations, Cheyne’s dad, Steve, who loved what we’d done for his son’s big day, came back to us to help him celebrate his own wedding to the gorgeous Briana! Are you still following us?!  Like son, like father; challenge successful! 🙂

Like his son’s wedding, Steve (+ Briana) opted for a tiered cupcake tower.  A variety of flavors and a colorful selection of cupcake wrappers made this tower the pertfect accent for their very colorful wedding.  Their celebration was poolside, and the focus was all about laid-back fun!  Abbey Party Rentals supplied the perfect style of tables and linens, and Wedding Paper Divas created adorable table art and wooden plaques.   Pair those elements with the decadent candy table and our cupcakes, and guests had their share of sugar!

Everything about this wedding was bright and fun but at the same time elegant.  Briana wore a stunning lace bridal gown from Isis Bridal Boutique, which was paired with tasteful gold and pearls from Harold Steven’s Jewelers.  Steve, in honor os his time in the military, wore his “dress blues,” complete with his impressive lineup of military medals of recognition.  Together, Briana + Steve are a beautiful and inspiring couple.  They radiate so much love & friendship.  It was an honor to be a part of this family’s special day, yet again, and it was so much fun!

La Jolla Cove has some of the best ocean views that San Diego has to offer. So, when a couple chooses to have their wedding in La Jolla,  La Jolla Cove Suites offers some amazing wedding options for the Cove-loving couple.

Sweet Cheeks Baking

The cake was filled with beautiful pastel yellows, which was just darling, and the couple, too, was darling as well!

Real Wedding :: Cherie + Cameron

Monday, September 9th, 2013

San Diego is the perfect place for a destination wedding, and for the couple featured in this REAL wedding, San Diego was an easy choice!  Cherie and Cameron are both New Yorkers, and they wanted the San Diego sun to be their backdrop for their beautiful nuptials!

Their wedding took place on a perfect San Diego summer day (no humidity like there is now!).  The gorgeous waterfront Bahia Resort Hotel hosted and catered.  Appropriately enough, the couple’s theme was nautical. Lots of blues, yellows and whites, and every element perfectly coordinated with the couple’s sea-loving theme. They were married outside, with the water behind them and palm trees giving the illusion of their own, private outdoor oasis.

Being as the couple was not local, they relied on communicating with wedding vendors via email and over the phone, so for Cherie and Cameron it was important to find wedding vendors they could trust. Fortunately, when it came to the cake, they had us!  We were pretty stoked about how it turned out, and the couple was too! Anchors aweigh!

Bringing the Sea to the Wedding

Wednesday, September 4th, 2013

The wedding location may have been Inland San Diego (Rancho Bernardo Inn), but the wedding cake was all about the sea.   Nature-loving/ocean-loving couple, Sharon & Tim King, chose to have a seaside-themed wedding cake for their big day, and we could not have been more thrilled about how the cake turned out!

Seaside Wedding Cake

Made of citrus with passion fruit curd & raspberry preserves, Italian butter cream with smoothed/beveled edges, and chocolate with white chocolate-raspberry mousse & Belgian chocolate ganache, the cake ingredients may sound complex, but really, they were perfectly paired!  That combination of flavors is a personal favorite of mine, in fact.

Special thanks to the amazing photographs by San Diego photographer, Resolusean (Sean Capshaw), the seaside cake and the happy memories from the cake cutting were perfectly captured.

Sharon + Tim were a super fun couple to work with, and their lovely relaxed nature & great sense of humor made this experience another positive one for the books!

Real Wedding :: Megan + Chris

Wednesday, August 21st, 2013

When two people are meant to meet, somehow, some way, it will happen; even when the odds, and geography, are against them.

That is exactly how the story goes for Chris and Megan.  Chris was born in Pennsylvania and went to high school in Europe!  Megan: she was born and raised in San Diego.  Their upbringing could not have more different, but the world has a way of bringing people together, and as such, Megan and Chris’s paths did cross.

They met at The Waterfront in the Little Italy neighborhood of San Diego.  Chris was out celebrating being sworn in to the California state bar.  Megan, who was out with friends, noticed Chris and the fact that he was wearing a Nordstrom shirt, and since Megan was working at Nordstrom at the time, it appeared to be a no-brainer opening to begin conversation.  But alas, the time was not meant to be, and Chris chickened out and didn’t talk to Megan.  Fortunately for Chris, his friend wasn’t as afraid and he got Megan’s number for him!

But it would be months before the two would meet again, and this time Megan and Chris bumped into each other at Maloney’s in downtown San Diego.  Chris’s courage had months to mature, and that night he spoke to Megan. Hours and a Taylor Swift song later, the rest became history.

Megan and Chris share many loves: bagels, reality TV, Jerry Seinfeld and Friends.  But most importantly, they have two rescue dogs: Lyla and Lena, who are the center of their world.  If they’re not walking them in the park or playing ball with them in the backyard, Megan and Chris enjoy spending time with friends, enjoying our favorite Little Italy restaurants, singing karaoke, and relaxing at home with some tea and ice cream.

REAL Wedding Board1

Fast-forward a couple of years and the two got married in a beautiful ceremony at the US Grant Hotel.   The couple took to downtown San Diego and celebrated their special day in the city in which they met.   It was a magical day for the lovely couple and their friends and family.  The ceremony site was candlelit in an exquisitely opulent fashion. The effect was clean and tasteful, a true reflection of the couple themselves. The reception décor was soft and romantic, with the colors of whites, grays, and then hints of royal blue.

Wedding coordinator, Carmin Cermak, of Carmin Design, did an excellent job capturing the taste of the couple, and all the vendors involved in this wedding did an incredible job making the event complete.  Megan and Chris are amazing people and together they are even more special.

The future: Megan and Chris plan to stay in ‘America’s Finest City’ and start a family.

WeddingWire Reviews ~ We love happy clients!

Monday, July 22nd, 2013

WeddingWire.com is a popular resource for brides and couples looking for local wedding vendors in their respective area.  Of the local vendors on the site, only a few can be among the most elite!

The WeddingWire Bride’s Choice Awards recognize the top 5% of local wedding professionals from the WeddingWire Network that demonstrate excellence in quality, service, responsiveness and professionalism. Unlike other awards in which winners are selected by the organization, the WeddingWire Bride’s Choice Awards are determined by recent reviews and extensive surveys from over 750,000 WeddingWire newlyweds!

Sweet Cheeks Baking has been fortunate to receive the Bride’s Choice Award many years in a row, and 2013 was no different!  Only seven (7) bakeries received the honors in the San Diego area!

As much as we love making creative and delicious cakes,  what makes our jobs even more rewarding: the love from our clients. Here are just a few of our reviews!

“We found Sweet Cheeks through our venue and I’m so happy we picked them! The cake was scrumptious, with hints of fudge and peanut butter my husband’s favorite. The bakers were so lovely and helpful, always getting back to us with our questions within a day. And they made the process so easy! We just had to go in for the cake-tasting, which was delicious and fun, and then it was all taken care of! Yummy yummy!!”

“Since I planned my wedding from abroad, I wasn’t able to do the cake tasting. But Sweet Cheeks Baking were very flexible – they allowed my friends to do the tasting and filmed a video so that we understood how everything worked.  We went for the classic cake with almond buttercream and mango curd and also for the chocolate cake with pistachio buttercream. The cake was stunning and tasty.

When returning the cake stand, I met the team in person and they were all very lovely!”

“The staff at Sweet Cheeks made our cupcake tower at our wedding in La Jolla…let me say that all 5 flavors (yes, they were THAT good, I couldn’t just choose 3!) were the best tasting cupcakes I have ever had! Our guests really enjoyed them as well and we had leftovers to send back with people too! I am still hearing about how great they were and it’s been a couple of months since our wedding. The staff is very responsive, friendly and easy to work with. We got exactly what we wanted and more! Thanks, ladies!”

“My wedding venue included a wedding cake as part of their package and gave us a choice of 3 different bakeries. My husband and I went to all three, did the tastings, and sat down with each one. Out of all of them, we liked Sweet Cheeks Baking Co the best! Not only did their cake taste amazing, but the whole team seemed extremely experienced, professional, and willing to go above and beyond to make their customers happy. On that first meeting we sat down with Elaine and she sketched out a beautiful design for us that fit our vision exactly. We signed the agreement then and there!

I know some companies seem like they stop caring after you sign a contract with them, but Sweet Cheeks continued their great customer service the whole way through. They never disappointed! Kristy continued to have fantastic communication with us (I would email her and she would always respond right away). On the day of our wedding, the cake looked exactly like the sketch Elaine had drawn for us… which just goes to show you what a great team of decorators and bakers they have as well. The cake tasted absolutely delicious too! They also saved the top tier for us (which I had forgotten to ask about) which is now stored in our freezer. Can’t wait to try the cake again on our one year anniversary.

Overall, I can’t say enough good things about them. I would absolutely recommend them 100% Thank you to everyone at Sweet Cheeks Baking Company for helping make our day spectacular!”

Cold beer on a hot day…or on your wedding day?

Monday, July 1st, 2013

We meet great couples all the time in our line of work, and Rebecca and David were one couple that we especially loved.  The two were married at the beautiful Estancia Hotel in La Jolla, and their choices of wedding dessert was as unique as this special couple!

A little background: the couple met in Denver, Colorado, when CO-native, David, was out with friends (and friends of friends), of which Rebecca was part.   The connection was instantaneous, and fast forward years later, and CA-native, Rebecca, moved to Denver be with her man!

Fast forward another few years, and this couple gets married in a gorgeous day at the Estancia.  Since they were getting married in CA, Rebecca wanted to do something special for her groom to remind him of home.  For Coloradans, Coors Light is like Rocky Mountain water; a staple in a CO man’s diet!  For David, Coors Light is his drink of choice!  Rebecca wanted to ensure that her husband’s favorite drink was incorporated into their special day!  For Rebecca, having the Coors Light groom’s cake was a way to bring Colorado to California.

It took a lot of hard work, but the result was a groom’s cake so special and meaningful that we, too, felt like we were from Colorado!  The couple was thrilled with not only the Coors Light cake, but with all the desserts we prepared for their wedding. Couples like this make our job!
