Craft Beer & Pizza, Who Could Resist?

Wednesday, October 14th, 2015

Those crafty folks at Craft Films put together this terrific wedding video for Molly & Brendan at Hotel Del Coronado, and we were so psyched to see both of our cakes (the super elegant wedding cake AND the DEEP DISH PIZZA CAKE and BEER GLASS CAKE for Brendan…too much fun!)

Beautifully Coordinated by Paige Jensen of Bliss Events, the evening flowed with seamless grace & fabulous fun!

Outdoor Weddings: Tip #3 (and more!)

sunglasses

Photo borrowed from www.personalcreations.com blog

:: GOOD IDEA:  sunglasses for guests if the ceremony is in bright sun

Probably no couple prays for rain on their wedding day, but bright sun can create just as many issues… Thankfully there are lots of great, stylish ways to keep your guests comfortable and your photos fabulous.

http://media.al.com/living_impact/photo/11115791-large.jpg
:: sunscreen in baskets as guests enter the ceremony site or reception area (look for zinc oxide & titanium dioxide)

Your photographer will be happily editing a LOT of sunburn photos and costing you a lot more money later…

Sunglasses are critical, but the result without sunscreen can look awful…

CUTE IDEA!  Personalized Water Bottles upon entry to ceremony – so many online sites sell these.
:: chilled bottles of water or pour spouts with ice-cold fruited water or sangria and non-alcoholic refreshers.

40th Birthday for Our Favorite Karaoke Lover

Friday, April 18th, 2014

Sometimes blog posts come across as impersonal or simplistic… It is with great LOVE & ENTHUSIASM that I savor the 40th Birthday celebration of our neighbor & wonderful friend Jason!!!  Thank you for all that you do for so many of us, You Handsome Hunky Wild Man!

Not a DAY over 39, my friend!

Not a DAY over 39, my friend!

Not only has he joined the ranks of “those over 40” with some of us, but he has enriched our lives with vibrant sounds of (read: Tone Deaf) Karaoke (can you sing Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror” any better?) through the walls of our Little Italy loft.

In order to create this KARAOKE SPEAKER CAKE, we borrowed one of his speakers with the explanation that we needed it for our own party…he was none the wiser.

We LOVE Jason, David, and all of their amazing friends who helped us to put together this outstanding surprise party, celebrating his love of Karaoke parties…with an ode to his favorite Michael Jackson…and Jason played the part like a ROCKSTAR!!!

Amazing friends & family created a photo booth, taped hilarious & incredibly touching selfie videos, and reveled for hours amongst Tequila & tacos…yum!

Glam Party for the Glamorous

Monday, November 25th, 2013

You don’t have to be a kid to enjoy a specialty birthday cake.  If you’re like once special lady, her 30th birthday was celebrated in high fashion!  The theme was high fashion/Red Carpet.  Women wore long dresses and men wore suits and ties.  The location was the amazing Andaz Wine Bar.  In order to match the glamorous theme, we went with a cake that was bold, yet elegant.

The reception was outstanding!  We received the following not from the births girl’s best friend:

“I wanted to thank you both of a job well done in creating the best cake for my best friends’ 30th Birthday bash. She loved it so much that I didn’t even get the chance to try it myself :)”

This friend even went so far as to write about and mention us on her own personal blog!  To see that post, visit here.

WeddingWire Reviews ~ We love happy clients!

Monday, July 22nd, 2013

WeddingWire.com is a popular resource for brides and couples looking for local wedding vendors in their respective area.  Of the local vendors on the site, only a few can be among the most elite!

The WeddingWire Bride’s Choice Awards recognize the top 5% of local wedding professionals from the WeddingWire Network that demonstrate excellence in quality, service, responsiveness and professionalism. Unlike other awards in which winners are selected by the organization, the WeddingWire Bride’s Choice Awards are determined by recent reviews and extensive surveys from over 750,000 WeddingWire newlyweds!

Sweet Cheeks Baking has been fortunate to receive the Bride’s Choice Award many years in a row, and 2013 was no different!  Only seven (7) bakeries received the honors in the San Diego area!

As much as we love making creative and delicious cakes,  what makes our jobs even more rewarding: the love from our clients. Here are just a few of our reviews!

“We found Sweet Cheeks through our venue and I’m so happy we picked them! The cake was scrumptious, with hints of fudge and peanut butter my husband’s favorite. The bakers were so lovely and helpful, always getting back to us with our questions within a day. And they made the process so easy! We just had to go in for the cake-tasting, which was delicious and fun, and then it was all taken care of! Yummy yummy!!”

“Since I planned my wedding from abroad, I wasn’t able to do the cake tasting. But Sweet Cheeks Baking were very flexible – they allowed my friends to do the tasting and filmed a video so that we understood how everything worked.  We went for the classic cake with almond buttercream and mango curd and also for the chocolate cake with pistachio buttercream. The cake was stunning and tasty.

When returning the cake stand, I met the team in person and they were all very lovely!”

“The staff at Sweet Cheeks made our cupcake tower at our wedding in La Jolla…let me say that all 5 flavors (yes, they were THAT good, I couldn’t just choose 3!) were the best tasting cupcakes I have ever had! Our guests really enjoyed them as well and we had leftovers to send back with people too! I am still hearing about how great they were and it’s been a couple of months since our wedding. The staff is very responsive, friendly and easy to work with. We got exactly what we wanted and more! Thanks, ladies!”

“My wedding venue included a wedding cake as part of their package and gave us a choice of 3 different bakeries. My husband and I went to all three, did the tastings, and sat down with each one. Out of all of them, we liked Sweet Cheeks Baking Co the best! Not only did their cake taste amazing, but the whole team seemed extremely experienced, professional, and willing to go above and beyond to make their customers happy. On that first meeting we sat down with Elaine and she sketched out a beautiful design for us that fit our vision exactly. We signed the agreement then and there!

I know some companies seem like they stop caring after you sign a contract with them, but Sweet Cheeks continued their great customer service the whole way through. They never disappointed! Kristy continued to have fantastic communication with us (I would email her and she would always respond right away). On the day of our wedding, the cake looked exactly like the sketch Elaine had drawn for us… which just goes to show you what a great team of decorators and bakers they have as well. The cake tasted absolutely delicious too! They also saved the top tier for us (which I had forgotten to ask about) which is now stored in our freezer. Can’t wait to try the cake again on our one year anniversary.

Overall, I can’t say enough good things about them. I would absolutely recommend them 100% Thank you to everyone at Sweet Cheeks Baking Company for helping make our day spectacular!”

Cold beer on a hot day…or on your wedding day?

Monday, July 1st, 2013

We meet great couples all the time in our line of work, and Rebecca and David were one couple that we especially loved.  The two were married at the beautiful Estancia Hotel in La Jolla, and their choices of wedding dessert was as unique as this special couple!

A little background: the couple met in Denver, Colorado, when CO-native, David, was out with friends (and friends of friends), of which Rebecca was part.   The connection was instantaneous, and fast forward years later, and CA-native, Rebecca, moved to Denver be with her man!

Fast forward another few years, and this couple gets married in a gorgeous day at the Estancia.  Since they were getting married in CA, Rebecca wanted to do something special for her groom to remind him of home.  For Coloradans, Coors Light is like Rocky Mountain water; a staple in a CO man’s diet!  For David, Coors Light is his drink of choice!  Rebecca wanted to ensure that her husband’s favorite drink was incorporated into their special day!  For Rebecca, having the Coors Light groom’s cake was a way to bring Colorado to California.

It took a lot of hard work, but the result was a groom’s cake so special and meaningful that we, too, felt like we were from Colorado!  The couple was thrilled with not only the Coors Light cake, but with all the desserts we prepared for their wedding. Couples like this make our job!

“I now pronounce you…; you can now eat some Bacon!” – Bacon Fest at the Del Mar Fair

Tuesday, June 18th, 2013

As we mentioned last week, the Big Bite Bacon Fest took place at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, and what also took place at this flavorful event: a wedding!

Yes, we said wedding.  The creators of the Bacon Fest (Farmer John sponsored the event at the Fairgrounds) offered a fully-paid wedding & honeymoon for a lucky couple, and the lucky couple turned out to be Adrienne & Eddie – who could not have deserved it more.  This amazing couple have 4 adopted children: 1 baby plus 3 children (all siblings)under 12 who were adopted as a group from a foster home in order to keep the 3 together!  Wow, right!?

Star 94.1 FM – San Diego hosted the wedding, with Jesse Lozano – known for his “Single Dad Diaries” feature on air – officiating the wedding!  How cool!

You may be wondering: what was the theme of the wedding?  Well, the theme clearly captured a country-western-Americana design (red, white, blue color scheme; red polka dot fondant table cloth; denim).  It also, as might be expected, had a solid focus not only on bacon flavor but also hand made glistening fondant bacon!

We at Sweet Cheeks Baking Co. were so thrilled to be a part of this special event and even more so thrilled because the winning couple truly deserved it so much!  It was Elaine’s favorite project in a while…that’s how big it was!

Now to the CAKE —  the flavor Donna created was a magical combination of vanilla bean cake soaked with STONE Brewing Co. Smoked Porter-Honey syrup.  It was filled/frosted in Honey-Bacon Butter Cream and freshly-baked Farmer John bacon pieces! (Note the little back denim pocket with SCBC logo & bacon stuffed into it… ;p)

Our creation was set up on stage for all event guests to see, and the happy couple shared slices with family & friends. Even better, the couple was able to take a small tier home to enjoy with their special family in the weeks to come!

We wish this couple nothing but the best, and we were so honored to be a part of this amazingly fun day at the Del Mar Fair.  We can only imagine what’s in store for next year!

Bacon lovers unite at the Del Mar Fair (I mean, they literally do unite!)

Tuesday, June 11th, 2013

Bacon and beer; the two best “B”s come together for this epic event: the Big Bite Bacon Fest.  Taking place this Sunday, June 16th, at the Del Mar Fair,  Farmer John’s Bacon Fest features a collection of all the best bacon foods, in addition to 50 craft beers, all available for tastings, samplings and enjoyment.

Yet this event is not just good food and drink; the Bacon Fest also happens to feature a “Bacon Lovers Wedding Ceremony.”  No, we are not kidding.  A real couple has been chosen to get married at the event!  And, the way that Sweet Cheeks Baking is involved: we are providing the bacon lovers’ pork-loving wedding cake!

Stay tuned for the pictures of this extra special wedding cake!  And, if your a Star 94.1FM listener, tune in on Wednesday, June 12th at 8:30am for a segment, which includes us, about the oddly unique weekend coming up!
