The Cats Meow! 9 Years, 9 Lives + Some Crazy Cat Ladies

Wednesday, March 30th, 2016

Sweet Cheeks’ Birthday parties are well known for FUN, YUM, and a little bit o’ CRAZY!  This year, as we celebrated 9 years in business, we chose the “9 Lives” theme of…yup, CATS.

About 350 people showed up – some in ears & tails, others with their own stuffed animals, most just to have a great time & taste AMAZING DESSERTS in cat-inspired style!  From kitty litter cakes to Grumpy Cat Cake, cakes to make the Cake Boss sigh… Gluten Free Desserts to funny edible cat hair balls (coconut, that is)…people were stealing the to-go boxes once again!!!

Baking at Home Made Easier!

Saturday, January 4th, 2014

Recently we were asked to review some adorable (super colorful!) new silicone baking cups from the line “Baking Buddies,” and we wanted to share these little gems for you home bakers.

As silicone, they eliminate the needs for both cupcake PANS (yes, really) and paper cupcake wrappers, so you can just peel them off the cakes once baked.  For our commercial use, they are note realistic, but most of our cakes came out very easily.

You can purchase them here for about $9/for dozen of them.  Fun!  Happy Baking!

Let them eat cake when they celebrate!

Real Wedding :: Briana + Steve

Friday, September 20th, 2013

The phrase goes: “like father, like son,” yet for this real wedding feature, we challenge that idiom.

To start, backtrack a few years.  It was the wedding of Cheyne (pronounced like Shane) + Megan, and let’s just say: it was a huge deal!  The couple had just won the “Amazing Race” together, and as a result, their wedding was a media frenzy!  (We even made it to PEOPLE Magazine online as a result, but that’s not the point!)

Well, back to present day, and with the coolest of situations, Cheyne’s dad, Steve, who loved what we’d done for his son’s big day, came back to us to help him celebrate his own wedding to the gorgeous Briana! Are you still following us?!  Like son, like father; challenge successful! 🙂

Like his son’s wedding, Steve (+ Briana) opted for a tiered cupcake tower.  A variety of flavors and a colorful selection of cupcake wrappers made this tower the pertfect accent for their very colorful wedding.  Their celebration was poolside, and the focus was all about laid-back fun!  Abbey Party Rentals supplied the perfect style of tables and linens, and Wedding Paper Divas created adorable table art and wooden plaques.   Pair those elements with the decadent candy table and our cupcakes, and guests had their share of sugar!

Everything about this wedding was bright and fun but at the same time elegant.  Briana wore a stunning lace bridal gown from Isis Bridal Boutique, which was paired with tasteful gold and pearls from Harold Steven’s Jewelers.  Steve, in honor os his time in the military, wore his “dress blues,” complete with his impressive lineup of military medals of recognition.  Together, Briana + Steve are a beautiful and inspiring couple.  They radiate so much love & friendship.  It was an honor to be a part of this family’s special day, yet again, and it was so much fun!

birthday parties in house – teaching kids to bake!

Friday, August 2nd, 2013

Not all birthday parties look the same.  Sure, we make cakes and treats for birthdays celebrating all ages, and we usually bring the cake to the respective party, but sometimes the party comes to us!

Kids Class - Birthday

Recently we had a special 10th birthday party in house for Francesca Fong.  It was her dream to celebrate her birthday baking with her buddies, so her mom asked us to help make that dream a reality.  We had Francesca & her darling friends visit the Sweet Cheeks kitchen, and we were able to teach these young ones the secret to delicious cakes and treats!  Each of the kids got to mix, bake, frost, design, and then take home their special creations…and what an awesome job they did!

Decked out in adorable aprons and chef hats that we bought for them to embellish later, the kids had a blast, and we did too!  It was an amazing day, filled with lots of laughs, lots of sugar, and some truly amazing photo ops.  (Many thanks to Darin Fong, Father of the Birthday Girl Francesca , for capturing such pics of our first Kids’ Cupcake Class!)

RIVERWALK GOLF, Great Place for San Diego Events!

Mini gingerbread cupcakes on rhinestone display

Finding great outdoor events spaces in San Diego seems simple, but it can be challenging. What a treat to find a great spot like Riverwalk Golf Course, which showcases not only the lush, pastoral calm from the rolling greens but also offers its central location for easy access, nearby hotel rooms for guests, lots of parking, protection from hot sun & rain, and of course great vendors!

Riverwalk hosted their season’s Special Events gathering for wedding & corporate clients and invited Sweet Cheeks Baking Co. to become their current cake & dessert provider…we feel flattered and thrilled to be chosen as their neighborhood bakery!

Wedding Cupcakes ~ Making a Statement

Monday, April 9th, 2012

Check out this  video to see how Cupcake weddings are fun and can be as beautiful & festive as wedding cakes when you let your bakery be creative.

Rosebud cupcake display

Fortunate enough to be asked by Nancy & Kyung to create the cupcake tower of their dreams, we feel so privileged to have been a part of their special day at the Ocean Beach Villas.  RA Creations Video made a beautiful wedding video for them, and they featured the cupcakes more than once…NOW we feel special!  Thanks Ruben!

DeShai Roberson of Oh So Chic Events coordinated the day beautifully, as you can tell by the level of calm on the bride & groom’s faces.  Nancy’s dress is magnificent lace, and the detailing in the floral pattern is mimicked in the top tier cake that they cut for the ceremony.  That’s the way to make cupcakes look delicious and beautiful without spending a fortune!

Inspiration is Everywhere…

A Look at our not-so-traditional wedding “cakes”!

Non-traditional weddings have never been more chic. Short dresses, vintage décor, and of course the modern wedding cake, or lack thereof, have quickly become the standard for brides everywhere. Whether you have a fascination with buttons, a love for outlandish design or a favorite childhood character, the Sweet Cheeks design team can bring your ideas to life. We absolutely adore the creativity and individuality that all of our couples bring to us.

The gals at Sweet Cheeks Baking Co. have devised, designed and created some of the most elaborate cakes in SoCal, but it doesn’t stop there. Many couples have decided to ditch the cake completely. Cupcakes and mini-dessert bars have become the preferred alternative, allowing our couples to be innovative with not only elements such as design and décor but also with how they showcase their fabulous desserts. Companies like Enticing Tables, specialize in enhancing your dessert display with cupcake towers, dessert towers, and much, much more.

Inspiration is everywhere! We challange you to look all around to find what truely inspires YOU! Whether it’s vintage, blue, borrowed or brand new… we can help bring it to life for your next special event!

Many thanks to the wonderful and talented people who that make these beautiful weddings possible!
