Happy Anniversary!

Thursday, August 29th, 2013

Finding good employees is difficult for any small business, and for Sweet Cheeks, although we create delicious and make happy memories all day, every day, we too have difficulty.  So, when we find an amazing employee that works as hard as ever for the business, well that person deserves recognition!

Krista Lautenbach was our first hire.  She has been with us for five years, our longest-tenured employee.  When she started, we all enjoyed days of leisure lunches and a workflow we could handle!  With her relentless help, though, Sweet Cheeks has gone from two (2) of us in a tiny space to twelve (12) of us in our very own kitchen!

She began her career with us as a part- time/temporary employee, working as a baker’s helper, otherwise known as a “cake slave.” Yet with the passing of years, Krista evolved into Sweet Cheeks‘s Lead Baker (A.K.A. “Master Sugar Shaker”).  She helped Sweet Cheeks Baking win the Food Network’s Cupcake Wars!

Besides her talent in the kitchen, Krista received yet another promotion, and currently, she manages our Sales department.  As the Sales Manager, she hunts down many local chefs and charms them with her wiles and good looks.  As a result, she has added numerous San Diego-based businesses to our extensive list of new wholesale accounts.  Our clients, which include a few fabulous kitchens, are: Loew’s Coronado Bay Resort, Del Mar Fairgrounds, SD Convention Center, Estancia Hotel, L’Auberge Del Mar, Omni Hotel Downtown, Marriott Marquis, Manchester Grand Hyatt, and many more.

We celebrated her 5 year anniversary with a little cake, made in her favorite current flavor of Champagne Butter Cream (of course her “favorite” changes weekly)!  We also treated her to a spa package, thanks to the amazing team at La Costa Resort, with her new, personalized hoodie robe.

We are so honored to have Krista as a member of our team, and our tokens of appreciation are only a small reflection of the respect we have for her, both as a person and an employee.  Our business grew because of Krista, and if it wasn’t for her help, we would not have survived the onslaught of craziness when we suddenly found ourselves getting multiple orders without multiple hands to help make & deliver them.

Ode to Krista

Some of the photos above are courtesy of  Heather Elise Photography.  They capture a special Sweet Cheeks Anniversary day at Sycuan Resort, inspired by Krista, where she envisioned a perfect world of “Champagne Buttercream Madness.”   With careful planning and an open mind, we created one of the world’s greatest inflatable fun days – “The Buttercream SLIP-N-SLIDE!”  Lathered up in buttercream and racing down at top speed, we all dove into the inflatable slide, make our way down the river of water, only to end up in a pool of watery icing! Amazing.

Life sure is sweeter (+ more fun) having Krista around! 🙂  Thank you, Krista, for 5 great years of service, coyness, and fun!

Real Wedding :: Megan + Chris

Wednesday, August 21st, 2013

When two people are meant to meet, somehow, some way, it will happen; even when the odds, and geography, are against them.

That is exactly how the story goes for Chris and Megan.  Chris was born in Pennsylvania and went to high school in Europe!  Megan: she was born and raised in San Diego.  Their upbringing could not have more different, but the world has a way of bringing people together, and as such, Megan and Chris’s paths did cross.

They met at The Waterfront in the Little Italy neighborhood of San Diego.  Chris was out celebrating being sworn in to the California state bar.  Megan, who was out with friends, noticed Chris and the fact that he was wearing a Nordstrom shirt, and since Megan was working at Nordstrom at the time, it appeared to be a no-brainer opening to begin conversation.  But alas, the time was not meant to be, and Chris chickened out and didn’t talk to Megan.  Fortunately for Chris, his friend wasn’t as afraid and he got Megan’s number for him!

But it would be months before the two would meet again, and this time Megan and Chris bumped into each other at Maloney’s in downtown San Diego.  Chris’s courage had months to mature, and that night he spoke to Megan. Hours and a Taylor Swift song later, the rest became history.

Megan and Chris share many loves: bagels, reality TV, Jerry Seinfeld and Friends.  But most importantly, they have two rescue dogs: Lyla and Lena, who are the center of their world.  If they’re not walking them in the park or playing ball with them in the backyard, Megan and Chris enjoy spending time with friends, enjoying our favorite Little Italy restaurants, singing karaoke, and relaxing at home with some tea and ice cream.

Fast-forward a couple of years and the two got married in a beautiful ceremony at the US Grant Hotel.   The couple took to downtown San Diego and celebrated their special day in the city in which they met.   It was a magical day for the lovely couple and their friends and family.  The ceremony site was candlelit in an exquisitely opulent fashion. The effect was clean and tasteful, a true reflection of the couple themselves. The reception décor was soft and romantic, with the colors of whites, grays, and then hints of royal blue.

Wedding coordinator, Carmin Cermak, of Carmin Design, did an excellent job capturing the taste of the couple, and all the vendors involved in this wedding did an incredible job making the event complete.  Megan and Chris are amazing people and together they are even more special.

The future: Megan and Chris plan to stay in ‘America’s Finest City’ and start a family.

We did a post a while back about our styled shoot with other San Diego wedding vendors.  We at Sweet Cheeks Baking Co. partnered up with some fantastic San Diego wedding vendors to create a look for a styled shoot that paid homage to time long gone.  Set at the amazing Villa de Flores in Rancho Santa Fe, the result of all the efforts is a photo shoot so fantastic that it took three separate features to showcase all the amazing images!

In our first post we included only a few of the amazing images (from each feature) by talented San Diego photographer, Amore Wedding Photography.  Yet now, we will include so many more!  The couples were adorable; the detail and design was so true to the time period; and the result: a photo shoot that not only was featured on the wedding blog, Style Unveiled Part I, Part II + Part III, but will also be featured in six (6) issues of San Diego Style Weddings magazine (in a 6-9 page spread) starting in October 2013!

The vintage-inspired wedding details, the hats, the outfits, the overall elegance; the “Gatsby” era was truly spectacular!  Enjoy the sampling of images we’ve selected, and if you want to see more, pick up the issue of  San Diego Style Weddings magazine in October!

birthday parties in house – teaching kids to bake!

Friday, August 2nd, 2013

Not all birthday parties look the same.  Sure, we make cakes and treats for birthdays celebrating all ages, and we usually bring the cake to the respective party, but sometimes the party comes to us!

Kids Class - Birthday

Recently we had a special 10th birthday party in house for Francesca Fong.  It was her dream to celebrate her birthday baking with her buddies, so her mom asked us to help make that dream a reality.  We had Francesca & her darling friends visit the Sweet Cheeks kitchen, and we were able to teach these young ones the secret to delicious cakes and treats!  Each of the kids got to mix, bake, frost, design, and then take home their special creations…and what an awesome job they did!

Decked out in adorable aprons and chef hats that we bought for them to embellish later, the kids had a blast, and we did too!  It was an amazing day, filled with lots of laughs, lots of sugar, and some truly amazing photo ops.  (Many thanks to Darin Fong, Father of the Birthday Girl Francesca , for capturing such pics of our first Kids’ Cupcake Class!)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, FRANCESCA!!!
